The coronavirus pandemic is not the only one humanity has suffered. Spend some time for this class session learning about any other historical pandemic by doing self-guided research. What other pandemic can you find that has plagued humanity? Where did it strike? Why were people vulnerable to it? How long did it last? Did the people who experienced it learn anything from the experience / do anything differently afterwards? What were the long-term effects of it on human populations or on the planet? These questions are just to get you started
I will talk about Spanish flu, the 1918 influenza pandemic. Lasting from Jan 1918 to Dec 1920. It infected 500 million people. The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, behind the Black Death. It was caused by H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. It was first observed in Europe, the United States and parts of Asia before swiftly spreading around the world. Citizens were ordered to wear masks, schools and all businesses were shuttered . A person who touches something with the virus on it and then touches the mouth, eyes, or nose can become infected the same that we face nowadays. what caused it is unknown exactly. They called it Spanish flu because Spain was hit hard by the disease.
