Chapter 17

The industrial revolution was a very significant event or rather series of events in history. A lot of changes happened ever-since. I discuss some of these in light of answering the below three questions:

4) How did the Industrial Revolution transform British society?

It was an economic miracle when you compare humanity during and post the Industrial Revolution with earlier eras. I will try to highlight some of these transformations as follows:

  1. The British textile industry was 52 million pounds of cotton in 1800, in 1850 it was 588 million pounds. The textile industry increased a lot.
  2. There was a big transition and transformation from agriculture to manufacturing.
  3. Scientific innovations and technologies improvements contributed to the advancement of agriculture.
  4. Large amount of people moved from rural villages to the new factories searching for opportunities.
  5. Roads improved significantly. Before the revolution, roads were poorly maintained. After that, not only did roads become more advanced and maintained, but also new ways of transportation were created making  it easier and cheaper for people and goods to move.
  6. Creation of the country banking sector, that gives loans and credits.
  7. There was also a huge amount of food because farmers started to use machines that planted crops.
  8. It created job opportunities and improved the way of living.
  9. The industrial revolution also significantly changed the politics of the world. It also changed daily lives more than it ever changed in the 7,000 years before then.
  10. Most of people started to be able to find a way to receive education.

5) How did Britain's middle classes change during the 19th century?

The middle class rose during this period. The upper level of the middle class was at the top of the society. They were wealthy and well educated. They owned the factories, the buildings, etc. They were bankers and merchants. It was the first time centuries of European history that anyone rich and educated to not hold a royal title. Such rising businessmen readily assimilated into aristocratic life. They were obtaining seats in parliament, sending their sons to study in top schools like Oxford and Cambridge, and owning houses. They made their wealth from the industries of the time. At the opposite there was a class called the lower level. these were the employees or workers who had little money but they didn't own property in their lives. Their lives were unstable. They were afraid to lose their jobs and their little money.

12) What did humankind gain from the Industrial Revolution, and what did it lose?

Humankind gained a lot of things from the Industrial Revolution such as increasing the output of goods and services, creating new middle classes of people in the society, supporting innovation, entering the workforce by multiple women, increasing access to education for many people, and increasing the wealth of many people other than the traditionally wealthy rulers and royals.

Nevertheless, humankind lost their stability, businesses started to grew very fast and working conditions started to be rather poor. Also, many people started working in unhealthy environments. Moreover, the Industrial Revolution caused an increase in pollution because of the factories, that we still suffer from, contribute to, and increase to this day! People used to be calm and relaxed, then life became more crowded, fast-paced, and less relaxed to a large extent, relative to what it was before the revolution.

  2. Hi Aya, great post! I agree with both your comments on the gain and losses of human kind during the industrial revolution. Before life moved at a slower place, and seemed less competitive. With the industrial revolution their was a fast paced life style, with crowds of people, and bigger cities.

  4. Hello! Aya You’ve done an amazing job in thoroughly discussing your answers. I agree with your statement in the first paragraph, “A lot of changes happened ever-since.” The impacts of the industrial revolution were massive and do serve as foundations to what we have, and what we are today. As per your first question, you gave very detailed answers which, I learned from. Many of what you listed I was not able to discuss in my blog. I find it interesting that the industrial revolution literally prompted half of what the world currently has. For your second question, you were able to eloquently describe the status of Britain’s middle class and it’s progression over time. For the third question, I totally agree with your first paragraph; “Humankind gained a lot of things from the Industrial Revolution such as increasing the output of goods and services, creating new middle classes of people in the society, supporting innovation, entering the workforce by multiple women, increasing access to education for many people, and increasing the wealth of many people other than the traditionally wealthy rulers and royals.” This further supports the idea that we owe much to the industrial revolution.
